El Paso Periodontal Disease Symptoms
Bacteria in the mouth can be harmful to the teeth and gums. The accumulation of plaque and tartar attract bacteria that release toxins that can eat away at healthy bone and gum tissue. When bacteria begin to cause damage to the gums, it is known as periodontal disease. Fortunately, this is a gradual process that can be stopped and effectively treated, especially when the condition is diagnosed early on. Dr. Bruce Gopin offers periodontal treatments to rid the gums of harmful bacteria and restore gum health. Dr. Gopin teaches his patients periodontal disease symptoms so that the condition can be recognized and treated in its earliest stages.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
When bacteria and plaque begin to build up around the teeth and gums, it is not likely to be visibly noticeable. However, even in the very earliest stages of periodontal disease, known as gingivitis, patients are likely to experience some symptoms of this condition. These symptoms will only increase as periodontal disease progresses. It is important for patients to recognize the possible symptoms of gum disease, as they are signs that periodontal treatment is needed. Below are some common symptoms of gum disease:
- Red, swollen gums
- Increased gum tenderness
- Bleeding gums, especially after brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
- Receding gum line or pockets of space between the gums and teeth
- Increased tooth sensitivity or pain while chewing
- A loose tooth or teeth
- Tooth loss (in the most advanced stages of disease)
As part of their general health care, Dr. Gopin offers his patients regular periodontal screenings. In this way, periodontal diseases can be treated early on, at the first signs of a problem. However, if patients begin to experience any of the above symptoms of periodontal disease, they should be reported to Dr. Gopin as soon as possible so that an examination can be scheduled and treatment can be discussed.
Dr. Gopin offers a full range of periodontal treatments. The type of treatment used on each patient will be determined based on how far the periodontal disease has advanced. Ideally, the condition will be diagnosed early on and a deep cleaning will effectively restore the health of the gums. Known as root planing and scaling, this cleaning technique uses ultrasonic therapy to clean the teeth all the way beneath the gum line, where the source of the problem lies. This is a minimally invasive procedure that can effectively rid the teeth and gums of harmful bacteria.
For more advanced stages of periodontal disease we do offer surgical treatment. Depending on the symptoms of each patient, surgery may involve pocket reduction, guided tissue regeneration, or bone grafts. Each of these procedures is aimed at repairing the damage of periodontal disease.
