Bone Grafting Creates a Healthy Foundation for Dental Implants
For patients with advanced periodontal disease, Dr. Bruce Gopin may recommend a bone grafting procedure at our El Paso, TX, practice to strengthen the jawbone. When periodontal disease reaches its advanced stages, or if a tooth is lost, the jawbone may begin to deteriorate. During bone graft surgery, Dr. Gopin will graft a patient's own healthy bone tissue to the affected area of the jaw in order to strengthen it and create a solid base for dental implants.
Bone Grafting Candidates
Patients who have experienced jaw deterioration due to periodontal disease or missing teeth may be candidates for a bone graft. Periodontal disease must be treated and successfully managed before a bone graft may be performed. Patients with an insufficient amount of bone tissue to support dental implants may also benefit from a bone graft, which can restore candidacy for implants. A bone graft can also provide cosmetic benefits, as the procedure can restore volume to the face, improving sunken features.
The presence of adequate healthy bone tissue is vital to your overall oral health.
What to Expect
Dr. Gopin will guide you through every step of the bone grafting procedure.
Prior to your procedure, you will have a consultation with Dr. Gopin. He will examine your teeth and gums and take x-rays to assess your jaw and the extent of bone loss. Together, you and Dr. Gopin will discuss your treatment goals and determine whether a bone graft is right for you.
Although there are several different natural and synthetic bone graft material options, self-grafts harvested from another location on your body are often the most successful. Self-grafts may require two procedures—one to harvest the bone tissue and the other to graft it in place. Dr. Gopin can explain this more fully during your consultation, and develop a timeline for your treatment.
Bone grafting can restore bone tissue that has become deteriorated due to periodontal disease or tooth loss. The procedure can also restore candidacy for dental implants.
Bone Graft Procedure
Depending on the location from which your bone graft tissue is harvested, you may require two separate appointments. To harvest your tissue, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area, and Dr. Gopin will remove the appropriate amount of bone tissue. You will receive an additional anesthetic at the graft site before it is placed. Dr. Gopin may also place a specialized membrane with your graft, which encourages tissue growth and helps speed the healing process. It can take about six months to fully heal after a bone graft.
Bone Grafting Benefits
Bone grafting offers both restorative and cosmetic benefits. Bone grafting can restore bone tissue that has become deteriorated due to periodontal disease or tooth loss. The procedure can also restore candidacy for dental implants.
