Pocket Reduction Can Restore the Health of Your Gums
With periodontal pocket reduction surgery, El Paso, TX, periodontist Bruce Gopin can improve the condition of the teeth and gums. This procedure involves gently lifting the tissue along the gum line to remove bacteria and tartar from the roots of the teeth. Cleaning this area and reducing the size of the bacterial pockets can help patients with gum disease avoid tooth loss. When Is Pocket Reduction Surgery Necessary?
Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria colonize in plaque, a sticky film that develops on the teeth. They feed on the sugars in food and produce acids that erode tooth enamel. You can remove plaque from the visible surfaces of your teeth with regular brushing and flossing. Plaque that is not removed can eventually harden into tartar, a substance that builds up along the gum line and can only be removed with professional cleaning. If it is not removed, the gums will become inflamed, and you may notice other symptoms of periodontal disease. If a deep cleaning fails to heal gum disease, the gums will begin to pull away from the teeth as pockets of infection form. This is the visible result of the soft tissue and bone that supports teeth being destroyed. If you do not receive effective treatment at this point, the teeth may loosen and fall out, or they may require extraction. Visual and x-ray examinations can be performed to assess the condition of the teeth, gums, and supporting bone structure.
Dr. Gopin is an experienced and skilled periodontist who makes the comfort and safety of all his patients a top priority.
Dr. Gopin performs pocket reduction surgery to repair the pockets so the gums fit properly around the teeth again. As with nonsurgical periodontal care, the treatment goal is to eliminate the infection and heal the gums. In some cases, treatment may include regenerating healthy gum tissue. In other cases, Dr. Gopin might recommend grafting to restore lost bone and gum tissue. Before beginning any treatment, Dr. Gopin will discuss your options and explain them in detail. Surgical gum treatments like pocket reduction can be performed under sedation to ensure your comfort.
Pocket Reduction Procedure
Pocket reduction targets the plaque and bacteria that lay deep beneath gums. In order to access the infected tissue of the deep periodontal pockets, Dr. Gopin will make small incisions in the gum line and gently fold back the tissue. He will then use special tools to remove the bacteria and tartar. If Dr. Gopin finds that the root is not smooth, he can perform root planing to reduce the risk of future bacteria accumulation. He may also administer an antimicrobial medication to eliminate any remaining bacteria, and to facilitate healing. He will then reposition the gums and close the incisions with very small sutures, which are usually removed after five to 10 days. After your pocket reduction surgery, it will be very important to pay extra attention to your at-home dental hygiene. We will also recommend that you keep up with your regular biannual cleanings and exams.
